GLOSSARY
UNDERTAKING
An undertaking is a formal, professional promise made by a solicitor to either do something or refrain from doing something during the course of a legal transaction. Under UK law and professional regulation, solicitor undertakings are treated with absolute seriousness.
Breaching an undertaking is a professional disciplinary offense enforceable by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) and the courts.
Conveyancers routinely rely on undertakings to ensure safe transactions, such as a seller's solicitor promising to redeem the mortgage following completion.
